A Joint Project of the City of Nederland
This vision includes providing an internet archive so that people may learn more about the history of the veterans memorialized in the Park. Having accurate records to add veterans’ names and to describe their personal stories will be an integral part of this process. The resulting database will become a great boon to people doing research on these heroes.
The initial names for the database were obtained from the photos and information about the Nederland Honor Walls and a 7 June 1942 letter Evelyn Chester wrote a letter to J.B. ? which listed 106 boys from Nederland that had enlisted before that date. To read a copy of the letters, click here. Additional names were gleaned from a variety of sources including the veterans themselves.
The Marion & Ed Hughes Public Library houses the database, striving to ensure that every name in the Memorial Park is complete with rank and branch of service and other information such as written and oral histories from the veterans themselves or their family and other electronic data, such as scanned copies of photos or newspaper clippings. This database will be available to the public and will serve as a link to each individual for genealogical or other research.
Volunteers are needed to help research the biographies of the veterans listed in the database, as well as to conduct oral history interviews. Information, documents and photographs from family and friends is welcome. To volunteer or contribute materials, please contact ... at 409-722-1255.
